The designing of identity materials for jewelry sometimes takes more energy than making the actual pieces. If you are selling at craft shows or into stores you must have professional-looking tags and labels! Otherwise, the sad fact might be that your jewelry is turned down by buyers only because of the unprofessional presentation!
The days of successfully using generic cards or labels with string tags and handwritten prices are over. But if you personalize your cards, tags, and labels it’s possible to set you apart from the sea of cards with swirly fonts commonly used to label jewelry.
Take your time and creative effort to fully develop the look and content of your hang tags, labels, cards and etc.
The basics are: your name, contact information, website, logo. In addition you could perhaps add some of these:
- Materials used in the piece
- A special name for the line and/or jewelry
- Carat weight (this doesn’t just apply to diamonds – every stone has a carat weight)
- Your inspiration
- A whimsical saying
It’s possible to do a combination of printed and handwritten information. For example, print pictures of your color logo on one side of photo – quality card stock, then cut it down to size and write on the back – if you have beautiful handwriting. Or print each piece’s individual story on labels that can be adhered to the hang tag. Experiment with different card stocks, textures, and colors to create a signature look for each of your designs.
Powerful labeling connects with your customer on a deeper emotional level! It’s your finishing touch, an expression of your identity as an artist, and a reflection of the care and quality you invest in each piece. Your presentation needs to say: “This piece is special”. When the labeling is right there will be confidence in your designs and buyers won’t turn you down!

Ditto for me, and thank you for a well thought out article to help upgrade our presentation. This thought had occurred to me briefly but I had no idea how to go about making a slick presentation, and a wire-wrap tag seemed a bit bulky and hard to identify. Can we make durable, ledgible tags in a mold from poly clay?

Thank you for all your comments! They are of great value.
I understand you want to make your own tag in a mold of polymer clay, but do you also intend to make the actual tag out of polymer clay or metal clay?

Very good info I think that all this is important things to do. I have made some tags and care instructions for my beadwoven items. Never thought of a metal tag for beadweave work tho. I have a tutorial for jewelry bags at

It was the bags I referred to when i liked your tutorial
Of course you need to find the right “tags” for your jewelry. Other materials can be perfect too

I need to figure how to do a store. everything takes so much learning. Have been blogging about 5 months. I like your blog. It is clean and fresh. Keep up the great work.
